TRAFALGAR PARK UPGRADE , NELSON With a history dating back to the 1890’s, Trafalgar Park has been the focal point of sport and recreation for the nelson/Tasman region for many years. Aside from the addition of a pavilion on the western side and a visit from the Queen in 1954 development at the park has been non-existent. The original grandstand on the eastern side still sits forlorn against the boundary fence and a new grandstand either side of the western pavilion is now completed. The two new grandstands seat 1360 spectators and are constructed from concrete tilt panels, cantilevered UBs to form the roof and protect the spectators from the elements. A utilitarian building such as this allows few opportunities for detail design, however the use of contrasting colour to the purlins, strips of roof lights above the access stairs, timber detail to the rear staircases and a detailed taper to the UB frames do add to the feeling some effort has been made to make this building architectural. This project has been designed as the first stage of a long overdue re development of the Trafalgar Park and as such is just a tempter of development to come. |
